Will “Mrs. Doubtfire” Be A Musical?
If you’ve never seen “Mrs. Doubtfire,” you should probably drop everything and go watch it now. It’s a classic Robin Williams film (RIP) and probably one of the greatest movies of all time, at least I think so. And now, it’s becoming a musical…
Oscar and Tony-winning composer Alan Menken has recently revealed that he’s currently at work on a musical adaptation of the 1993 comedy “Mrs. Doubtfire,” which starred Robin Williams as Daniel Hillard, a man who impersonates an elderly female housekeeper in order to spend time with his children after his divorce.
“It’s going very well, it’s in its early stages, and that’s probably all I can say,” Menken told EW during an interview. “We’re really enjoying working on it.”
Menken is best known for working on Disney musicals such as “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast”, and is joined on the “Mrs. Doubtfire” project by Tony-winner David Zippel on lyrics, and fellow Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein, writing the book.
Sure, Broadway has been recycling old movies and making them musicals for quite some time now. And sure, a few of them (really most of them) are kind of awful and cheesy, but this writer only has two words for this project: Yes, please!
What do you think of “Mrs. Doubtfire: The Musical?”
