MTV Celebrated their 40th Anniversary of their Video Music Awards, and it was undoubtedly the gayest year yet! The VMAs have evolved into the VM-gAys, and the event radiated queer excellence this year.

The awards show lives up to its name by being over-the-top and outrageous with memorable performances by Lil Nas X and Normani. And, of course gorgeous fashionista moments from their host Doja Cat and other queer icons Billy Porter, Kim Petras, and Charli XCX to name a few.

It seems like Lil Nas X breaks the internet anytime he steps out of the house! His debut album hadn’t been released prior, but was already winning awards. The “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” video took home the top prize of video of the Year. Lil Nas X holds many titles including artist, award winner, meme lord, and he’s quickly become a living gay icon. He even shouted out the secret behind his success in his acceptance speech—the gay agenda.

“First, I want to say, ‘Thank you to the gay agenda.’ Let’s go gay agenda.”

Lil Nas X also treated us with a mashup of his hit singles, Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” and “Industry Baby,” featuring Jack Harlow. This wasn’t the only highlight of his evening; Lil Nas X also used this spotlight to shed light on the AIDS epidemic in Southern states.

During his performance, he invited the director of community investments for the Southern AIDS Coalition, Mardrequs Harris, to join him on stage. Harris was supporting a black top with the number 433,816 embroidered in red across his back. This statistic, According to GLAAD, signifies the number of people in the region where 52 percent of all new HIV diagnoses occur. These individuals living with HIV are mostly made up of Black men having sexual relations with other Black men, according to the CDC.

Normani’s performance of her new single “Wild Side” was giving major Janet Jackson vibes. The track and the music video features Cardi B, but the rapper and new mommy of child number two didn’t make it out to the awards. Normani performed solo, but effortlessly managed to make things hot and heavy by bringing out Teyana Taylor for a sultry, seductive lap dance.

Finally we reach our ever-so-stunning host of the evening Miss Doja Cat, who proudly described her outfit as trying to “look like a worm.” Our girl never misses a chance to be a fashion icon. Billy Porter was spotted supporting a shiny silver suit; Kim Petras was flaunting a head-to-toe, latex bodysuit gothic dress combo, and Charli XCX came out in a sheer, black, see-through, lace dress number.

Now remember, the VMAs are for the gays, and go watch Lil Nax X’s performance below!
