¡Viva! Streets Takes Over Denver this Summer
With summer around the corner, there are so many events to look forward to and many new events piquing everyone’s curiosity. ¡Viva! Streets is coming to town and taking over the downtown Denver streets to create open pathway to help everyone to enjoy this summer.
Everyone is encouraged to go out and bike the streets dance, walk, and enjoy what ¡Viva! Streets has to offer. ¡Viva! Streets are closing roads in downtown Denver from Weston in Five Points to the intersection between South Broadway and Alameda. That is 3.5 miles that will be closed to cars but open to people. ¡Viva! Streets takes place across four Sundays this summer. The first event was May 14, and there are still three days left to celebrate from June through August. The remaining events are on June 4, July 9, and August 6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This event has so much in store for everyone! Food trucks, live music, a beer garden, sponsor activations, vendors, and kid-friendly activities will be there. Taste of Colorado also expanded its Labor Day Weekend to take place at the same time as ¡Viva! Streets. Those that attend can enjoy Colorado’s fantastic food while biking along the open streets.
“Opening up our streets will allow people of all ages from across our region to experience Denver and connect with one another in a whole new way. We’re excited to be joining cities from across the globe in a movement to encourage healthier choices for our community and environment,” says Kourtny Garrett, president and CEO of Downtown Denver Partnership, The Downtown Denver Partnership is hosting this event alongside the City and County of Denver, Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), the VF Foundation, and a coalition of community partners.
A large-scale event like ¡Viva! Streets aren’t isn’t at all; in fact, it’s been around in Latin America and places like Colombia since 1974. In Bogotá, Colombia it is known as Ciclovía. Biking and Ciclovía have been more than a mode of transportation, but a tool for freedom to fight back oppression. It has liberated culture, and ¡Viva! Streets not only recognizes these powerful roots but aims to celebrate them. Celebrate Denver with ¡Viva! Streets this summer.
