The Black Actors Guild is presenting a timely piece of theatre titled Hype Man, created by renowned playwright Idris Goodwin. The show will run from now until September 13 at the People’s Building in Aurora, where folks can enjoy safely while following COVID protocols.
The live-performance safety measures are as follows, according to the group:
– We are keeping the audience 15 ft from the performers at all times.
– Audience members are required to wear a mask when not drinking and should drink their delicious beverage and then put their mask back on.
– We are adhering to The People’s Building’s “Phased Reopening Plan” which includes a housing capacity of 35 audience members max.
– You’ll be allowed to sit next to those whom you came with; otherwise, everyone will be six feet apart.
– Drinks will be ordered via text and then placed onto the order table. Contactless delivery is required.
Having just opened on August 7, Hype Man is already receiving great reviews. Rated 8.5 out of ten by the Boulder Theatre Critic Beki Pineda, the show has been called “heartbreaking,” “important for everyone,” and “a conversation starter for race and allyship.”
Although they prioritize sharing Black voices, the Black Actors Guild is open to all artists and performers. “The Black Actors Guild believes that every individual holds a unique story, and that telling that story can make a real difference. Whether it’s comedy, storytelling, improv, or script-writing—we see it as our duty to use those mediums to create a better world,” reads their website.
Hype Man is about a rapper, beat-maker, and, of course, hype man beginning to find success making music together. But, harmony is harder to find when the interracial hip-hop trio clashes over how to use their newfound platform in the wake of a police shooting. Hype Man is a rhythmically woven drama exploring race, representation, fame, and friendship.
Join the Black Actors Guild as they produce the show both live and online. Both will include a talkback after every show in which they will take questions from both sets of audiences. For further information on the event or to purchase tickets, click here.
