TransPortation in Colorado: Fundraiser by Drag Queen Banna Meanshot
I think that we can all agree that moving is a big shift in a person’s life. It’s messy, it’s stressful, and sometimes, it comes abruptly when we’re the least ready for it. I know that I was ill-prepared when I learned that I’d have to shift places in December. I received a three-week notice. However, many others are finding themselves with even less time, and even more urgency. As the legal administration has changed hands and new laws have come into being restricting transitioning in several states, many folks are picking up their lives and coming out to Colorado… and not just because of our professional women’s soccer team.
Colorado has extensive legislature protecting the identities of transgender individuals, including Jude’s Law, which went into effect in 2019. Besides the awe-inspiring mountains and the vibrant culture of the Denver area, this makes Colorado incredibly attractive for queer folks. Unfortunately, it comes with a pretty hefty price tag—On average, rent in Denver demands a startling $1650 per month. With so much going into cost of living, personal transportation falls a bit under the radar, even moreso for many individuals who arrived in Denver without a car to begin with.
In an ideal world, this is where public transportation would step in, but realistically, that doesnt always happen. Fortunately, Rodeo Drag Queen Banna Meanshot has stepped up to the challenge. After noticing how public transportation in Denver can be somewhat dicey, she took initiative, to start a GoFundMe so that transgender people can be on the road safely and legally.
With a rolling $3500 goal, Banna’s Meanshot’s fund will be periodically dispersed to wherever need it is most needed, in chunks of a few hundreds to thousands. No donation is too small, and every dollar donated is impactful.
