Tommy Dorfman Announces Engagement to Girlfriend

Trans actress Tommy Dorfman is getting engaged! Dorfman announced her engagement a few months after filing for divorce from Peter Zurkuhlen. Dorfman was married to Zurkuhlen for five years but, since coming out as a trans woman, the couple have decided to part ways and remain friends.

On the Broad Ideas podcast, she mentioned that decision was partially due to her interest being “not necessarily reflected in a gay man.” 

Since her divorce, Tommy Dorfman explored her attraction toward women. While speaking with Rachel Bilson on the podcast, she states, “I was really scared to admit that I was perhaps attracted to women because I felt I had such safe relationships with all the women in my life because they thought of me as a gay man.”

Dorfman shared her fear but also expressed that her attraction for women was unresolved and unexplored.

Since dating women, Dorfman met her current fiancé and fell in love. Although the identity of her fiancé is unknown, Tommy has expressed how supportive and very affirming she has been during Dorfman’s transition. Her fiancé has been a big help in administering Dorfman’s estrogen shots and supporting Tommy through them.

Prior to her transition, Dorfman was not only unhappy but was depressed and suicidal.

While battling with her mental health, she was also recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. During this time, Dorfman was widely known for her role on 13 Reasons Why as Ryan Shaver.

On the podcast, Dorfman says that she would’ve transitioned sooner if she wasn’t on the show. 

“I think because of my work being so tied to my body and face and identity, or whatever (a character) identified as… When it came to anything around dysphoria or gender or stuff that had already been really present, I was like, ‘Nope, that’s not for now; I’m working.”
