Tammy Bruce, Lesbian Fox News Host, Next Trump Cabinet Pick

Trump continues to build his cabinet as he selects Tammy Bruce to be the U.S. Department of State spokesperson. This role does not require Senate confirmation and consists of communicating the U.S. foreign policy objectives both abroad and within the country.

Tammy Bruce, though a lesbian, has become a far-right Fox News anchor after years of working as a liberal activist in the 1990s. Of her past, Trump states that “after being a liberal activist in the 1990s, (she) saw the lies and fraud of the Radical Left, and quickly became one of the strongest conservative voices on radio and television.”

Before becoming a voice for the far-right, Bruce was the head of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) from 1990 to 1996. She was also the first openly gay women to host a mainstream talk show, The Tammy Bruce Show. Her descent began with the OJ Simpson trial, where she protested his acquittal, and linked it to domestic violence. Black feminists and civil rights activists found this to be an oversimplification and minimization of the racism in the case.

After being chastised by NOW, Bruce continued blazing her conservative trail. She advocated for anti-gay media host Dr. Laura Schlessinger after GLAAD called on Paramount to cancel her show in 2000. Then, in 2002, she published her book The New Thought Police, stating it would  “expose the dangerous rise of Left-wing McCarthyism.”

She’s well known as Fox News host and for her transphobic remarks. She has stated that having to fill out pronouns on a form is “forced speech.” She seems to be against the politicization of identity, but not in the way that the LGBTQ+ community are often used as pawns, but in the sense that being “forced” to enter your pronouns is pushing an agenda. She states, “It’s not about homophobia; it’s about everything being politicized. Having messages, political messages of any type, being pushed onto us. None of us want that, no matter what your sexual orientation or your race or your background (is).”

Along those same lines, she also has been a contributing factor in the right’s anti-trans fear-mongering. She has covered Chloe Cole, an anti-trans “detransitioner,” as well as calling Maine’s LD-1735 bill “part of a larger scheme” by the left to traffic minors. LD-1735 would have made Maine a sanctuary state for those searching for gender-affirming care.
