Right as we pass through the Mothers’ Day holiday and weekend, star and creator of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Rob McElhenney got together with GLAAD to gush over his two moms, Helena McElhenney and her wife Mary Taylor.
In a tender and quaint conversation on GLAAD’s YouTube page, the two tell their love story and the story of the family’s acceptance of their relationship.
“The minute I met her, she was the person that I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with,” Helena says.
“I would go home and say, ‘I met this woman; she’s—I just love her. I can’t help myself,'” Mary says. “‘I can’t help myself. The blue eyes melt my heart.’ Then it hit, and love is love.”
The two recounted their first few years together, which weren’t always easy. “I was afraid not only for my children but for myself,” Helena says.
The two got through it, and after decades together, the couple tied the knot three years ago. Rob described having two moms as “a pretty great gift.”
Rob expands upon his experience in a statement, “By the standards of 1984 South Philadelphia, our upbringing was unconventional, but my brother, sister and I were able to recognize early on that not every family looked exactly the same or like what we saw on television. Yet we had nothing but love and support and compassion and empathy. And I think that that allowed us to flourish.”
In a recent season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Rob’s character Mac, who was often hinted by creators and rumored by fans to be gay, finally came out. Recent seasons of the show have Mac exploring his sexuality as a new, open element of his character.
