Raise Your Heart Rate with Dream Nails
Intersectionality, accessibility, and squashing the sexist, patriarchal norms through queer…
Remember back in the day when that TV personality or movie star got your heart rate racing, and it made you start to question things? Well, London-based Dream Nails can recall exactly that moment and made a brand-new anthem to celebrate that moment of realizing you’re a little bit queer.
The punk quartet Dream Nails has released a song “Jillian” and paired the upbeat and energetic tune with a music video that is unstoppable and downright home-grown. While in quarantine, the band relied on folks to act out the moment that the band members remember falling in love with the problematic TV fitness guru Jillian Michaels.
“Both [bassist] Mimi and I discovered strength training through Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred home DVD,” says singer Janey Starling. “…and the catch-phrases were too good to not make a song from! Since then, she’s said some uncool and unkind stuff to Lizzo, which we were really gutted to hear. This song is very much about finding your own strength, regardless of your body shape.”
Taking its typical political stance on an issue, the band took to writing a song that emphasizes on the power of self-improvement, coming out, and loving yourself. Body positivity and embracing your queerness is what “Jillian” is all about.
“This is a song about realizing you’re queer while you’re doing a workout DVD,” explains Starling. “It’s a personal-power anthem about finding the strength to come out.”
Noted for strong emphasis on empowerment from a queer, feminist perspective and involvement in a host of political causes, the band’s budding reputation has seen it tour in the U.K. and Europe with Cherry Glazerr and Anti-Flag. Additionally, Dream Nails has made three consecutive appearances at the Glastonbury music festival, all before releasing its first LP.
The band just announced its debut self-titled full length to be released August 28, 2020.
