Queer Artist Chad Post Talks New Single ‘If I Was God’

New York-based electronic pop artist Chad Post is a man of many talents, and he is quickly making a name for himself.
Earlier this month, he released an evocative single entitled “If I Was God,” which features soaring melodies, as well as experimental and colorful electronic soundscapes. According to Post, the track is an unforgettable anthem of self-forgiveness when a relationship doesn’t work out.
“This song kind of comes from a dark place,” he says. “I was doing a lot of sitting around, and I realized that there were certain things in my past that I was still getting over, like heartbreak and broken friendships. I came to the realization that there was nothing I could have done in those situations, and there are certain things that are out of your control. I really wanted to put that forth in this track. I spent almost two years punishing myself for the things that went wrong, but I realized while laying in bed one night, even if I was God, I literally couldn’t have changed anything in their minds. I could be the most talented person on earth, the most attractive, the kindest, but nothing would change how they perceived me.”
“If I Was God” is the first single from Post’s upcoming project, which is expected to release June 9.
Post has not decided whether it’s going to be an EP or a full album, and the title has not officially been announced yet, but it will be the third of a trilogy of records that, when experienced sequentially, tell an overall story that’s linked together.
“I like to go through regal, larger-than-life themes for my albums,” he explains. “I have these grandiose ideas for album concepts. My last album really went in a darker direction because, like I said, I was getting over these kinds of loose ends. This new project will be more fun and poppy. The first singles usually happen to be a bit darker and more mysterious; I don’t know why I do that, but trust me, there’s a lot of pop mixed in this dark, mysterious vibe. There are a lot of catchy hooks, and I’m going to include many ballads as well. It’ll be a mixed bag, but I usually curate the whole track list to tell a full story.”
Ultimately, Post hopes that listeners are inspired after hearing “If I Was God,” and that they realize we all have faults.
“We all have a process that we go through and everything that someone else is going through doesn’t necessarily mean it’s an impact on your self-worth or self-esteem,” he says. “This is a unique and dynamic song, and I really want people to feel badass and empowered from it. Know that no matter what you do in a situation, you could do your absolute best in any situation, and it still might not be good enough for certain people. That’s OK, and that’s their loss. It’s your life that you need to be in control of and fulfill. Live to the best of your ability.”
So far, the track has received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback, which Post says is “encouraging.”
In addition to singing and songwriting, Post is also a poet, cinematographer, and social media influencer. Hailed as the “Prince of Pop Poetry” and a “pop juggernaut” by various music publications, he first came to prominence in 2018 after releasing his debut single “Unlovable.” The track’s cinematic and captivating music video caught the eyes of producers who, impressed by his sound and lyrics, wanted to collaborate with him.
Post is heavily inspired by the Gilded Age and Gatsby era, and he draws influence from the likes of Lana Del Rey, Lady Gaga, and Adele. He says he has always had a passion for singing, but he didn’t realize it was something he could and wanted to do professionally.
“I would sing all the time out of tune when I was little,” he jokes. “I was very shy as a kid, so I always knew that I had that passion, but I was like, is this something I could actually do? It was kind of like a pipe dream, but then I started taking voice lessons privately. I then stopped taking them because my mom wouldn’t let me do them unless I did recitals as well. I was like, I’m not doing recitals, so I stopped when I was around 10. Then when I was 15 or 16, I realized I still wanted to do music, I just had to grow out of the shyness. So, I started to write songs and study music. I took up voice lessons again, and it was a steady climb from there. I always knew I wanted something grand for my life, and that would be through music.”
As for the future, Post hopes to tour and perform for live audiences again soon. He is also focusing for each single to be a complete and full concept.
“I want everyone to understand the sound and aesthetic of the record,” he says.
If all goes as planned, Post’s next single, “Mean Streak,” will come out early April.
