Putin Claims Russia is Not “Anti-Gay”

President of Russia, Vladimir Putin defended his country’s anti-gay laws in front of the Human Rights Council. His claim says that Russia is not “anti-gay” but has received that label from other countries, especially the United States. He goes on to say the U.S. is much more homophobic than Russia, stating 14 states have bans against gay sex (which have been overthrown by the Supreme Court in 2003.)

“Russia is not intending to breach the rights of gays though the priority of the country is a traditional family,” says Putin. “The problem with the rights of gays in Russia is a label put on Russia by other states.”

“We have this label that we persecute people with a different sexual orientation, but we do not do so under criminal law,” he said.

He defended the anti-gay laws saying that they were in place to protect children.

“A society that cannot protect its children has no future.”
