A proposed Kansas bill wants to reward the transphobic
Our neighbors to the east, Kansas, just introduced the “Student Physical Privacy Act,” two bills which would allow public school and university students in the state to sue their school for $2,500 whenever they saw someone they identified as transgender in the bathroom.
The bill, which is most likely going to get shut down, appeared with only two weeks left in the Kansas legislation session. Even Republicans in the state are looking down on the bigoted bill. Rep. Stephanie Clayton said that the situation “demonstrates a distinct lack of focus.”
But, there is a possibility that the complementary bills (SB 513 and HB 2737) could pass, and the trans people living in Kansas could be in for a rough road ahead.
Of course the idea of bathroom bounty hunters lurking in the stalls, waiting for someone who they think is trans to walk into the ‘wrong’ bathroom is insane. More than likely, however, a narrow-minded, uneducated person could take offense to a trans person for using ‘their’ bathroom would report a trans person.
But, not only is the bill ludicrous, it is targeting our queer youth.
Bills such as these have been popping up all over the nation, and it is our responsibility to draw attention to them, and stand behind those that would affect.
