When we realized that Opera Colorado was going to be producing Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece, Il Trovatore, little did we know how lucky Out Front Colorado would get – an interview with a major player in the production. Greg Carpenter, Opera Colorado’s General Director said Il Trovatore brings a modern twist to the age-old art of opera.
The body ages, but the spirit is timeless. The only true power an individual has over aging is one’s interpretation of it – whether or not we let it hold us back. And the four seniors in our cover story gave us an inspirational look at what aging means in an LGBT community often said to be obsessed with six-pack abs and body waxing.
Transgender individuals are still banned from service, and the military still does not recognize same-sex marriages – which means that health, housing and death benefits are not afforded to same-sex partners.
Moreover, many servicemembers discharged under DADT are opting to return to service – and some face bureaucratic hurdles upgrading their discharge status so they can re-enlist.
“Those things still have to be corrected,” said Kelly, “and AVER is an organization that’s looking to help advocate for those changes.”
