OFM Gallery: Rainbow Kitten Surprise at Mission Ballroom
To kick off pride in Denver, OFM had the opportunity to celebrate with Rainbow Kitten Surprise at the last show of their album release tour. They played for three sold-out crowds at Mission Ballroom earlier this month. The band, originally from Boone, North Carolina, released album Love Hate Music Box after taking off six years to regroup as a band. The Boonies came in full force to support as App State and NC shirts were seen in the crowd. While they took a long leave of absence, their fans kept listening to their music, bringing their song “It’s Called: Freefall” back into the spotlight.
The night was kicked off with singer-songwriter Madi Diaz. She played a selection of both new and old songs, pumping up the crowd for the amazing band that will follow her. Her song “God Person” has recently been featured on NPR’s All Songs Considered’s Best Songs of 2024.
RKS came out singing their new single “LOL.” There were smiles all around for the band when they heard the sold-out crowd singing word for word. Lead singer Ela Melo has taken time off before due to her mental health, and it is clear that time paid off. She was shining confidently onstage throughout the whole performance.
They played through a handful of songs off their new album, but fan favorite hits like “Cocaine Jesus” and “Seven” were almost not played loud enough, as the crowd knew every word, singing beautifully with the band. The roaring encore lasted a good few minutes as the band came back out to sing “Superstar.” Ela dawned the stage wearing a larger-than-life rainbow coat, matching a member of the audience who came dressed to the nines.
The whole show was filled with a vibrant energy that everyone has missed for the past six years. If you missed RKS when they were in Denver, make sure you catch them on the next leg of their tour, when they will be stopping through surrounding cities with incredible opening acts.
