National Organization for Marriage Renews Efforts in North Carolina

The anti-LGBT group National Organization for Marriage (NOM) recently donated more than $100K to back the campaign for Thom Tillis, Republican candidate for North Carolina’s Senate seat. Tillis is hoping to unseat Senator Kay Hagan.

The group spent the money on $113,000 worth of postcard mailers which were sent out on Monday in support of Tillis who, in his past work as speaker, fought against the court cases that brought same-sex marriage to the state.

NOM also purchased airtime for commercials which will run a supportive view of “traditional marriage” and will be broadcast three times around the 6pm news cycle. The contract for the advertisement stipulates that it will not refer to any political candidates or “a message relating to any political matter of national importance,” but will instead be a simple vow of support for traditional marriage. The contract was signed by Frank Schubert, who brought us previous commercials against Prop 8 and other similar legislation.

President of NOM, Brian Brown, sent out the following message regarding political action the group in taking in other states: “Television ads have been purchased and will be on the air this week in North Carolina and Arkansas. Automated phone calls have been made in California, Massachusetts, and Oregon. Mailers have been sent out in North Carolina and are being sent out in California.”
