Mixed reactions stem from HIV study results that show infection decrease

HIV AIDS

HIV infections are on a downward slope, and according to Associated Press, “16 out of every 100,000 people ages 13 and older were newly diagnosed with HIV in 2011, a steady decline from 24 out of 100,000 people in 2002.” The decrease was reported in “men, women, whites, blacks, Hispanics, heterosexuals, injection drug users, and most age groups.” This decrease is an unprecedented number: it’s a 1/3 decrease in new infections in just a decade.

So why aren’t we celebrating?

Because among men who have sex with men, new HIV infection rates are on the rise.

The reasons behind both results are still unknown at this time
