Marvel Introduces its Newest Trans Superhero: Escapade!

Marvel

With Pride Month only a few weeks away, comic book readers are anticipating the release of the newest Marvel’s Voices: Pride anthology featuring Escapade—a trans mutant superhero. Escapade’s story will be central to the first Pride release, joining fellow LGBTQ Marvel heroes.

This 20-page adventure follows Escapade, whose real name is Shela Sexton, as she tears through the Marvel universe with her trusted sidekick and tech-savvy best friend, Morgan Red. The two use their powers to steal from criminal and corrupt corporations to help those in need like modern-day Robin Hoods.

Escapade is able to switch locations with people and trade physical or abstract attribute such as possessions, organizational status, skills, superhuman powers, and even situations! She can only access her powers by being in close proximity to her target, which leaves room for lots of mishaps to happen along the way. Escapade and Morgan Red become professional thieves in the Marvel universe, until they meet Emma Frost and Destiny who change the course of their lives forever. Escapade’s storyline is written by acclaimed author Charlie Jane Anders and drawn by artist duo Ro Stein and Ted Brandt, with colors by Tamra Bonvillain. The Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1 release is just the beginning of Escapade’s journey. Readers can expect to follow along with her adventures as a trans mutant hero and watch as her story gets more complicated, when she becomes entangled with the X-Men and a deadly prophecy is unveiled in her future.

This is Marvel’s second annual showcase of LGBTQ characters and creators, and have plenty more in the works!

“Marvel Comics is proud to highlight its commitment to LGBTQI+ representation with stories that spotlight existing stars AND introduce brand-new characters to the Marvel mythology,” Marvel states.

Anders already has plans for Escapade’s return this fall in a special story arc of New Mutants that she guest-wrote. Anders says, “I hope that Escapade and Morgan Red will inspire trans and nonbinary people everywhere to believe that they, too, can fight for justice with the power of creativity and chosen family.”
