I don’t really think the ‘pubs understand what puberty blockers are.
Recently, Margarie Taylor Greene lashed out on X over an unpublished study that found puberty blockers have no effect on mental health.
Our children should NEVER be politicized.
It’s disgusting that a study on the effect of puberty blockers on kids went unpublished because it revealed the lie Democrats and Big Pharma have been selling to Americans that they improve mental health.
Congress must urgently work to…
— Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene???????? (@RepMTG) October 24, 2024
Greene claimed the unpublished study “revealed the lie Democrats and Big Pharma have been selling that they improve mental health” in her X post.
Greene is referring to an article in The New York Times which claimed that an NIH funded study was unpublished because it found that puberty blockers don’t improve youth mental health. The Times article itself was already spun, given that it didn’t mention the 28 other papers produced by the project, nor the published research from the project showing that mental health rates for youth were worse when they deferred puberty blockers, according to journalist Erin Reed. For another, a study published in 2020 in the journal PLOS One actually did find the puberty blockers increased youth well-being.
The Times article referenced an interview from lead Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy in which she said she decided not to publish the study because of fear of it being used against transgender kids. She also noted the reason mental health didn’t improve is because before puberty, the trans kids already had good mental health.
“They’re in really good shape when they come in, and they’re in really good shape after two years,” Dr. Olson-Kennedy is quoted as saying in the Times article.
Greene used the New York Times Article to parade her Protect Children’s Innocence Act, a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for minors federally. The bill would also prohibit federal funding of gender-affirming care and prohibit teaching about gender-affirming care in higher education.
“We need to protect kids from this gender industry … where they are targeting kids giving them hormone replacement therapies, giving them puberty blockers, and performing surgeries on them,” Greene says of the bill at a rally in October.
To Greene’s point about the gender industry: I dislike big pharma as much as the next doll, but you don’t see me getting all fascist over it.
