Laverne Cox Named “New Face of the Year” for 2014

Laverne Cox is on fire. In 2014, the breakout star of Orange Is The New Black was honored, featured, and awarded too many times and too many things to name in a single post. And the year ended with one more special honor for the actress and activist—POPSUGAR website chose Cox as its New Face of 2014, making her the first trans woman to receive such an honor.

The annual beauty awards held by POPSUGAR, described on its website as not “based on appearance alone,” also honored Tyra Banks, “a model who helps teen girls embrace body image,” Jared Leto, “an Oscar-winning male with luscious locks” and Cox, “a transgender actress who’s breaking industry standards.” Bravo, Cox!

“With her breakout role on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, Cox has broken the Hollywood beauty mold this year as a transgender actress. In 2014 she covered Time magazine and has been nominated for several awards. Not only do we think this is the beginning of a fruitful career for Cox, but she’s also changing our society’s standard for what it means to be beautiful,” said Jessica Cruel on behalf of POPSUGAR.

Last year’s winners included Solange Knowles, Michelle Williams, and Lily Collins. Other award winners named by POPSUGAR include Lupita Nyongo named Red Carpet Winner for her stunning looks across the board, Gwen Stefani for Best Retro Look, Cate Blanchett for Most Radiant Skin, and even bad gal RiRi who was credited for her influential beauty with the Trendsetter Award.
