HRC Bashes Republicans for Government Shutdown

In a recent ad, the Human Rights Campaign has bashed House republicans for being responsible for the government shutdown. In the ad, HRC outright calls out House republicans for not doing their jobs as representatives of their people.

HRC President Kelley Robinson says of the shutdown, “A shutdown is the height of irresponsibility and would interrupt critical government services, hurt working families, and endanger our national security. This outcome was entirely avoidable, but House republicans have instead hijacked the appropriations process to attack LGBTQ+ communities rather than doing their jobs.”

The video says, “…House republicans spent the summer trying to divide us and failing to pass essential spending bills. Instead, they’re trying to limit the health care you and your family can access, ban books and flags, and block enforcement of civil rights laws, all while risking the government grinding to a halt.”

It can be strongly argued that the observations made in the HRC ad about our current republican representatives are entirely correct. In recent months, instead of focusing on the safety and wellbeing of the people they claim to be looking out for, House republicans have been systematically and viciously tearing rights away from marginalized groups. This can be seen in all of the anti-LGBTQ+ laws, most notably the anti-trans bills that have been going through, and in the loss of reproductive rights for people who have uteruses.

The irresponsible use of power exercised by these elected officials only shows us a window into the dangers of being way more focused on taking away basic human rights that have been fought for and should have been had by the individuals fighting for them to begin with. Trans individuals should not be ostracized for being trans. People with uteruses should not be imprisoned for doing what they would like with their body.
