Facebook: ‘You’ve got two weeks to change your name or Bye, Felicia!’

(IF that’s even your real name, “Felicia” … )
So, in a new case of “oh hell naw!” Facebook has warned drag performers who’ve set up accounts under their pseudonyms to either use their legal names or face deletion in two weeks.
(For real?!)
For real.
So basically, the question is: Why?
A writer from The Daily Dot takes a stab at that answer:
“Some believe that the action isn’t a bigoted one, but one driven by monetary gain. If the site forces performers to migrate to fan pages, they’ll have to start dolling [sic] out cash to Facebook for higher billing and promoted posts on fans News Feeds. Honestly I feel it is about your profile matching your credit card — it’s all about money.”
Per Facebook’s policy, your display name must be “your real name as it would be listed on your credit card, driver’s license, or student ID.”
Mmk … and even though reps from Facebook held a pow-wow Wednesday with LGBT activists who posit that this move is an affront to transfolk who haven’t — or in some cases CAN’T — legally change their name, they let Facebook spokesman Andrew Souvall drop this gem:
“Over the next two weeks, we hope that [those who aren’t using their legal names on Facebook] will decide to confirm their real name, change their name to their real name, or convert their profile to a Page.”
So there you have it. Just change your name legally in two weeks.
Easy peasy.
