Elon Musk’s Daughter Granted Legal Name, Gender Change

Elon Musk’s daughter has been legally granted a name and gender change after filing a petition for one in April. According to court documents, the 18-year-old states that she made this request to align her name with her gender identity and to sever her public relationship with her father.

She says, “I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form,” as her reasoning for her name change request.

Her legal name is now Vivian Jenna Wilson, her new last name being the maiden name of her mother, Justine Wilson. A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge granted Wilson a new birth certificate last Wednesday that accurately reflects the change in her name and gender.

Justine has five children total with Musk, Vivian and her twin brother Griffin, and triplets Kai, Saxon, and Damian, who are 16. Wilson and Musk were married for eight years and separated in 2008.

"I had a weird childhood," my 18 year old said to me. "I can't believe I'm as normal-seeming as I am."

As her daughter was in the process of getting her name and gender change approved, Justine tweeted her support for her child. It is assumed that the mother is referring to her daughter Vivian in light of the news about her being circulated at the time, but the tweet could also be quoting Vivian’s twin brother, Griffin.

Musk has not publicly spoken about his daughter’s decision, but he has made some problematic comments in the past regarding trans and nonbinary people. A controversial tweet of his from December of 2020 sparked a lot of backlash after he stated, “I absolutely support trans, but all these pronouns are an esthetic nightmare.”

He has since been outspoken about his plans to support republican candidates going forward, including those who signed the “Don’t Say Gay” law, such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. He made the statement of support in May 2022, nearly one month after his daughter’s court filing.
