Celebrating 16 Years of Hope: Denver’s HIV/AIDS Fashion Fundraiser

This year marks a significant milestone for Denver’s LGBTQ+ community as we celebrate the 16th anniversary of the Red Ball—the largest and oldest HIV/AIDS fashion show fundraiser in the city. With humble beginnings as an ode to World AIDS Day, the event has come to harness the power of Denver’s thriving cultural scene as a force for good.

In 1983, when the magnitude of the HIV/AIDS crisis came into sharper focus, Colorado Health Network (CHN) was founded to innovatively and equitably meet the evolving needs of individuals in Colorado living with, and at risk of, acquiring HIV and other health conditions. In 2008, to bolster their programming and reach a new generation of supporters, CHN introduced Red Ball to the world.

The event, focused on igniting awareness and support for those affected by HIV/AIDS, has blossomed into a cherished tradition that unites the community while providing essential services to those in need.

The annual fashion show is not just a showcase of local talent and style; it’s a powerful statement about resilience, love, and solidarity. For 16 years, the event has featured local designers, models, and performers, all coming together to raise funds for vital services that benefit Coloradans across the state, including unhoused and low-income individuals.

Where do those dollars go? Free HIV/AIDS and STI testing and prevention services, a free community food bank, needle exchange, free dental care, housing subsidies and deposit assistance, insurance subsidies, elder care, and so much more.

A lot has changed since 1983. In 2024, Colorado Health Network now has regional offices at six locations across Colorado which serve more than 5,500 community members across the state.

One of the key highlights of this year’s show is the emphasis on intersectionality and inclusivity. The organizers have worked tirelessly to ensure that the event reflects the diversity of our community. Featuring models of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds, this commitment to inclusivity not only makes for a more vibrant event but also sends a powerful message that everyone deserves to be seen and celebrated.

Guests can expect an evening of compelling testimonials from real clients, aerial performances, live musicians, drag performances, a live and silent auction, and an exclusive VIP hour for those ticketholders.

Preparing for this year’s show, it’s hard to understate the impact it has made over the past 16 years. The funds raised have changed lives and affected positive outcomes for thousands of CHN clients through the years. For many, this support is a lifeline, allowing them to focus on their health and well-being without the constant worry of financial instability.

Moreover, the fashion show serves as a platform for education and awareness. Each year, attendees are encouraged to learn about HIV/AIDS, dispelling myths and stigmas that still surround the disease. By bringing these issues to the forefront, CHN fosters an environment of understanding and compassion, empowering community members to take proactive steps in their sexual health.

The event also offers a unique opportunity for local businesses and artists to collaborate and contribute. Many local designers donate their time and talents, showcasing their latest collections and visionary designs while supporting a cause that resonates deeply. This synergy not only promotes local talent but also strengthens the bonds that unite us all in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

As we celebrate this remarkable anniversary, we invite everyone to join us for an unforgettable evening that sends a clear message—We must stand together, unwavering in our commitment to fight for the rights and dignity of every individual.

In a world where challenges persist, events like this remind us of the power of creativity and compassion. Let’s come together to celebrate, support, and continue the vital work needed to create a healthier, more equitable future for all.
