Denver Health Continues to Provide LGBTQ+ Health Services: A queer person with short brown hair and glasses sits in a hospital bed looking at the camera

Despite political uncertainty following the devastating election results, Denver Health says they’ll continue to provide LGBTQ+ health services and fight for queer healthcare rights under Colorado state protections.

In a recent email sent to patients, Denver Health’s CEO declared that “Denver Health will continue to work to ensure that the care our patients need is protected. We are committed to advocating vigorously for the programs that allow us to serve every patient with respect, dignity ,and equality, and our commitment remains: to protect and champion the health care rights of the communities we serve. Denver Health will continue to provide access to high-quality and equitable care, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.”

Colorado is one of the few lucky states in the U.S. that has solidified protections for it’s LGBTQ+ citizens under the law and is committed to fighting for our human rights going into the future.

In the most recent election, Amendment J was passed with a 64% majority to remove language from the Colorado constitution, making it clear that “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state.” is no longer the case.

The email from Denver Health goes on to say, “We see you; we are here for you, and we are not going anywhere. If you or someone you know needs to connect to affirming health care at Denver Health, including mental health support, please visit our website for information.”

Even if the Trump administration puts the power over gender affirming care back into the hands of the states, even if they try to ban it across the country, even if they manage somehow to make medically transitioning illegal, Coloradans have state protections.

From our place of privilege, hopefully we can become a refuge for those seeking asylum from red states and be a leader of progress in the forefront of court battles as we fight for justice and freedom.

It’s empowering to know that institutions like Denver Health are on our side.
