The DCPA Presents: Newsies
Headlines don’t sell newspapers — Newsies sell newspapers.
The touring show Newsies is playing at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) from March 23 through April 9, 2016. I’ll be seeing the show this week knowing only what I’ve seen in Disney’s cult-favorite film about the history-making newsboys, starring a very young Christian Bale, that includes a song called Seize the Day. Don’t pretend like you don’t know what I’m talking about. 1992. Disney. Musical. Turn-of-the-century newspaper boys. Singing. Dancing. Some might argue, more than a hint of gay undertones. Yeah, that movie, Newsies. You remember, right?
So what is the stage version of Newsies like?
According to Broadway.com, “Newsies is a fast-paced new musical with jaw-dropping choreography, catchy songs by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, and a book that theatergoers of all ages will enjoy. This is a feel-good family musical that will introduce Newsies to a new generation while pleasing fans of the original.”
