Colorado Ballet to Open Val Caniparoli’s Jekyll & Hyde

Jekyll & Hyde

The Colorado Ballet is set to open the regional premiere of Val Caniparoli’s Jekyll & Hyde on February 2, 2024. Jekyll & Hyde will run through February 11 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver.

Choreographer Val Caniparoli is an internationally known choreographer who has created multiple ballets including Lambarena and Ibsen’s House. Caniparoli has contributed to over sixty ballet companies during his 50-year career, including The Metropolitan Opera and the San Francisco Ballet.

“I’ve always wanted to do a duet between two men, but they were the same person—different personalities. I put two and two together and came up with Jekyll & Hyde, says Caniparoli.

Jekyll & Hyde features a live score from the Colorado Ballet Orchestra performing music from composers such as Frédéric Chopin, Krzysztof Penderecki, Henryk Górecki, Wojciech Kilar, and Henryk Wieniawski.

“Not only does this production showcase the incredible talent and artistic range of our dancers, but it also demonstrates our commitment to expanding the company’s repertoire by presenting compelling new works that resonate with our diverse community. I invite Colorado audiences to enjoy a captivating and thought-provoking experience unlike anything they’ve seen before,” says Artistic Director Gil Boggs.

Jekyll & Hyde is inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 Gothic novella about a man struggling with his dangerous alter ego. The ballet explores themes of the human psyche and self-discovery as Dr. Jekyll grapples with questions of “good” and “evil.” Set against the backdrop of Victorian London, Dr. Jekyll must do his own dance with his malevolent alter ego Mr. Hyde.

Tickets for Jekyll & Hyde range from $40 to $160 and can be purchased via coloradoballet.org or via Patron Services at (303)-339-1637.
