As part of WisdomSound, a benefit concert for the Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery and Nagi Nunnery in Nepal, Cher is set to perform, along with special guest Richard Gere. The event will be live-streamed and feature additional performances by Laurie Anderson, Jon Batiste, Norah Jones, Angelique Kidjo, Steve Miller Band, Gregory Porter, and Maggie Rogers.
The event organizers believe that Buddha’s teachings offer powerful methods to deal with suffering, guiding people toward compassionate action. Monastics spent years practicing ancient, 2,500-year-old methods At Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery and Nagi Nunnery, then teach them in Nepal, online, and through the Shedrub Mandala’s international network of centers and organizations.
They are compelled by Buddha’s teaching to care for others, also supporting social action in Nepal, including providing traditional and secular education to young children from rural villages, offering food packages to subsistence workers impacted by COVID-19, supporting reproductive help and women’s empowerment, and more.
The event will also feature a brief teaching and introduction to Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling by Tibetan Buddhist meditation master Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, who serves as the monastery’s abbott. The program will be 75 minutes in length and also will include short videos that showcase the monastery, including the lives of young monks and nuns there, the monastery’s social work activities in and around the Kathmandu Valley, and the other satellite institutions around the world.
“Join us for the livestream … and show your support for these precious monastic institutions and the benefit they bring to the world,” the organizers assert on the event page.
The event premieres on Mandolin.com at 8 p.m. ET and will be available on-demand through November 11 at 8 p.m. ET. Admission is free, though donations are suggested. Tickets are available here, though WisdomSound suggests anyone curious to learn more look over the FAQ if they have any additional questions.
