Forget what you’ve heard about gay men not being able to throw ball or take a hit — after all we somehow continue to survive the punches thrown at us everyday from a never ending brigade of ignorance.

Scrum a new documentary highlighting a gay rugby team is hoping to change the stereotype that gay people can be gay as well as talented, passionate athletes. The documentary from Poppy Stockell now on the festival circuit, follows three players on the Sydney Convicts, a predominantly gay rugby squad as they prepare for the Bingham Cup.

Following Canadian Brennan Bastyovanszky, Japanese powerhouse Aki Muzutani, and Irishman Pearse Egan the film looks to dig deep into the stereotypes, the self doubt, the courage, and the brotherhood that comes along with being a gay rugby player.

The annual Bingham Cup, gay rugby’s equivalent to the World Series, is named after Mark Bingham, the brave player who died helping to stop terrorists on United Flight 93 from crashing the plane into the Capitol building on September 11, 2001.
