Lesbian fashion is not an oxymoron. Lesbians have always been an important part of fashion. When I worked in the fashion industry in New York City, I knew plenty of lesbians in the industry. They were never the name on the door – they were the names behind the ‘names.’
Every year around Thanksgiving, thoughts of food begin to fill my head – an itinerary of holiday goodies to prepare and enjoy. These delights range from my uncle’s famous cream of mushroom soup to my sister’s artful sugar cookies.
I used to be part of that life. Fashion Week is like the Oscars for fashion people – you spend days in advance planning your wardrobe. You make sure that you’ll attend every ‘important’ show or party. I packed two bags of black clothing plus amazing scarves, jewelry and shoes. Then I worried endlessly about those clothes, jewelry and shoes. I worried people would think I was no longer relevant since I’m not part of this life anymore.
The problem often becomes eating and drinking too much, which creates that bogged-down feeling that gets many off track from diet and exercise routines.
It’s that time of year again – my favorite – when our alter egos can come out to play. We can’t always run around in our favorite superhero costumes. The dilemma lies in deciding which personality to flaunt during the few short days we can. Here are a few ideas to get you started, but remember, the best costumes are always those created from your own imagination. And, if you display an air of mystery, you may get the chance to take trick- or-treating to a whole new level.
As I got older, adventures seemed to stop being around-the-corner affairs. The desirable places weren’t accessible on road trips – you can’t drive to Paris. Flying became a necessity. Now, I’m on a plane every week. Compared to 30 years ago, it’s not so glamorous.
