‘Bros,’ First Gay Rom-Com by Major Studio, Shares Trailer

Bros

Bros has been in the headlines for a while now. The gay rom-com was written by and stars Billy Eichner, making him the first openly gay man to ever write and star in his own major studio film. The film also makes history as the first major studio film with an entirely LGBTQ principal cast.

And now we have an idea of what to expect with the first Bros trailer.

Eichner shared a letter along with the trailer, addressing the historic nature of the movie’s September 30 release and the “LGBTQ elites.” He says he wanted to make a movie that felt authentic for the LGBTQ folks the movie is about, “who have been so profoundly underserved by Hollywood over the years, particularly by major movie studios,” Eichner writes. From the storytelling to the cast and crew, he adds that prioritizing the needs of LGBTQ people was crucial during production.

“While it’s insane to me that it took this long to get this movie made, it’s still incredibly exciting to me—and a real sign of progress—that the same studio making movies like Jurassic World and The Fast and the Furious is also releasing this R rated gay rom with an all LGBTQ+ cast, and with as much passion and enthusiasm as they release those other films,” Eichner writes. “It’s taken way too long. I wish we had a movie like Bros when I was a kid—but I’m so excited and proud that this day has finally come!”

Even in the first minute of the trailer, it’s evident that Bros is confronting queerness in a way other, major studio films have been reluctant to.

It starts with a meta moment of sorts, with Eichner’s character recording a podcast discussing a meeting with Hollywood producers about creating a romantic queer film that “a straight guy might even like.”

“They said, ‘We just want a movie that shows the world that gay relationships and straight relationships are the same. Love is love is love,’ and I said, ‘Love is love is love? No it’s not! That is bullshit!'” Eichner says as the voiceover continues. “Our friendships are different; our sex lives are different; our relationships are different.”

As more LGBTQ films, made by and for queer folks—like fellow queer rom-com Fire Island—continue hitting the mainstream, the community immediately responded to the Bros trailer with high hopes.

One right-wing website, Bounding Into Comics, was less enthused, posting a piece with the exhausting headline, “Disney Actor Who Wants ‘MAGA Lunatics To Burn In Hell’ Releases Trailer for New R-Rated Gay Sex Comedy That Takes Shots at Straight People, Features Explicit Sex Acts.”

When the site took to Twitter to share the story, Eichner retweeted it, adding “Hey that’s me!!! And here’s the TRAILER!!!” with a link, along with another comment on the thread, “This honestly makes me very excited for the BROS press tour,” completed with a rainbow emoji.
