Boy stars in new Barbie commercial

Whatever team is behind the Barbie ads this year has really stepped its game up.

First, in early October the team behind Mattel’s Barbie ad brought us an adorable video of young girls leading very adult lives by teaching a college class about the human brain, leading a museum tour, talking with strangers at an airport about prior trips to Pennsylvania and Transylvania, and giving animals a check up as a vet. At the end of the ad, the words “when a girl plays with Barbie she imagines everything she can become” fade onto the screen.

Now, a new ad has snatched the attention away from the women empowering ad, and has focused its message to a new audience. Young boys. The new Moschino Barbie ad features a young, fabulous boy playing with two of his little girl friends.

“Moschino Barbie is so fierce!” the boy says as he plays with a barbie done up in designer Jeremy Scott’s sleek glamour. Barbie’s cellphone goes off and the male child says, “It’s for you, Moschino Barbie,” before winking at the camera.

This is a triumph for sissies everywhere. Had I saw this when I was a gayby, playing with my little cousins barbies, and thinking that I was the weirdest boy in the world because I wanted to make sure every barbie had on a pair of heels, I would have been so excited.

Let these ads show these children that nothing is holding them back from being themselves, and pursuing their dreams, whatever they may be.
