In the music video “King,” Florence lures audiences in once again with her seductive, sultry, multidimensional, and versatile voice. Florence returns with resonant harmonies and poetic lyrics that defiantly smacks the patriarchy right in its face as she commands gender on her terms, Florence declares: “I am no mother; I am bride; I am king.”
Of course, the song or theme wouldn’t belong to Florence if it didn’t contain her notorious piercing fluttery vibrato, nuanced multilayered message, and stunning cinematic visuals. The ballad KING is a portrayal of someone intentionally transcending the stereotypical gender lines and societal expectations placed on women.
This is what the songstress had to say about gender:
“As an artist, I never actually thought about my gender that much,” Welch says. “I just got on with it. I was as good as the men, and I just went out there and matched them every time. But now, thinking about being a woman in my 30s and the future, I suddenly feel this tearing of my identity and my desires. That to be a performer, but also to want a family, might not be as simple for me as it is for my male counterparts. I had modeled myself almost exclusively on male performers, and for the first time, I felt a wall come down between me and my idols as I have to make decisions they did not.”
King is positioned as Welch’s’ first single debut of 2022; prior was her 2021 recording for the film Cruella, and 2018 was the album release of High As Hope.
