RuPaul won an Emmy for ‘Drag Race’

Earlier in the year, RuPaul Charles told Vulture that he would rather have an enema than an Emmy after being nominated for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program.. As we watched the legendary drag queen, queer icon, and entertainer walk off the Emmy stage last night, clutching the gold award in a pink, polkadot suit we could rest easy knowing that he ‘can have both.’

First of all, this is huge. This is a drag queen winning a mainstream award for simply being true to her brand. Also, Drag Race airs on Logo TV ― an LGBT television network not included in the traditional cable package ― and to have a queer television show and network take home an Emmy win like this is a major victory for queer visibility on a mainstream level.

“I think about all the kids who watch this show all over the world who finally have an emotional navigation system,” RuPauls told Entertainment Tonight. “This show and the 100s of girls who have come through our show have told their stories so graciously and have really helped young people around the world navigate their lives.”

Yes, you are doing a huge service to the queer community. But, you can’t deny that RuPaul deserves this award for simply entertaining.
