North Carolina is now burning rainbow flags outside of churches

Dear North Carolina,

What in the hell is going on in your state? It was just last month since your Governor signed House Bill 2, which is one of the most ludicrous anti-queer bills to hit the scene in some time, and ever since it seems like you’ve really lost your way.

Not only are celebrities, corporations, porn sites, and healthcare advocates criticizing the bill very publicly, but they are depriving your citizens of entertainment. This isn’t a shock since you are depriving queer people of basic human rights. Unfortunately, none of these things are changing your mind, and you’ve taught your people that it is okay to belittle the queer community in any way they can.

Over the weekend, the United Church of Christ in Hillsborough experienced two instances of property damage when someone in your state caught two rainbow flags on fire first on Friday, then again on Monday after the church replaced them.

“The flags went up about three weeks ago “just to let the community know and LGBT folks in the community know there was a church that supported them and welcomed them,”Rev. Jay Kennett told The News & Observer.

Members thought it was important “not to hide from who we are and how we share God’s love,” he said.

But, your Tar Heels don’t feel the same way. Why? You have showed them that systematic oppression and bigotry is acceptable. You’ve taught them that queer people do not deserve the protections and rights as everyone else. You’ve taught them that our lifestyle is not something to respect, and kicking us when we are down is perfectly fine.
These types of crimes will continue to happen as long as you make it okay. So please, North Carolina get your life together and start treating people like people.
XoXo ,
All of us from the outside looking in
