WATCH: Rachel Maddow breaks down ‘kill the gays’ rally & GOP candidates
On Monday night, Rachel Maddow went hard on three republican candidates who, over the weekend, attended an Iowa conference hosted by a right wing pastor who declared “it’s not a gay time!”
“It really was a ‘kill the gays’ call to arms,” said Maddow on her MSNBC program.
The video, which first highlights a democratic forum Maddow hosted in South Carolina with Hilary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O’Malley, takes a dramatic turn at around the six minute mark, when she turns her attention to another forum attended by republican candidates Bobby Jindal, Mike Huckabee, and Ted Cruz in Iowa. She presented video of Kevin Swanson, a virulently antigay preacher from Colorado, who organized and hosted the event in Des Moines. In one clip, Swanson told the National Religious Liberties Conference he believes that churches should have sackcloth and ashes at their entrances for Christian families whose “sons are rebelling, hanging out with homosexuals, and getting married, and their parents are invited.”
“And I would sit in cow manure, and I would spread it all over my body.”
The video focused mainly on Swanson, who linked a same-sex kiss to devastating wildfires in his home state of Colorado and condemned Harry Potter because author J.K. Rowling specified that a principal character was a gay man. Also, compares gay people to “sores” and how society is painting smiley faces on those puss-y, open sores.
Pointing to Swanson’s history of anti-LGBT remarks, she added, “He has spoken in the past about the need to execute gay people in order to live in a properly Christian society. He did not hide that light under a bushel once the candidates were there.”
The 18 minute video highlights a very serious problem. Three men, who are running for president, listened to this man rant and rave about how disgraceful the LGBT community is, and how in the bible they are sentenced to death, but not one of these men said anything to combat these ideas. In fact, Cruz jokes with Swanson about fantasy football as he walks onto the stage.
Are we joke to the rest of the world yet?
