Indiana Governor Signs Controversial Anti-Gay Bill into Law; Audra McDonald Takes to Twitter
It seems Indiana Governor Mike Pence has signed a controversial anti-LGBTI bill into law, and is now taking to extreme heat from it.
During a private ceremony yesterday, Pence signed SB101 which allows anyone – including private businesses and organizations – to discriminate against LGBTI people and others due to religious beliefs.
‘This bill is not about discrimination, and if I thought it legalized discrimination in any way in Indiana, I would have vetoed it,’ Pence said in a statement.
Unfortunately, that’s not how people are taking it. Among the people speaking out against the new law is Broadway star, Audra McDonald.
The actress took to Twitter in a series of messages directly aimed at Governor Pence. Click here to see the string of tweets. But I’ve also included a condensed version below:
“Some in my band are gay & we have 2 gigs in your state next month. Should we call ahead to make sure the hotel accepts us all? or could you maybe send us a list of where its okay for us to go? Might the law apply to me?(I’m black). or maybe I should fire my gay band members just to be on the safe side,” she wrote. “Or MAYBE…we need to stick to singing in states that don’t legislate hate?”
