We just received a call here at the office moments ago from Meredith Keene, the daughter of PFLAG Denver co-founder Nancy Keene. She told us that, while still healthy in spirit, Nancy isn’t doing too well physically, and the family is hopeful that the LGBT community of Denver might find a little extra holiday spirit on them and assist with Nancy’s relocation to a facility that attends to the needs of seniors.
When both of her children came out to her, not only did Nancy accept them with full and unconditional open arms, she grabbed her signs and went Rosie the Riveter on our city. She dug her heels in and ferociously advocated for gay and lesbian rights like the loving mother we wish every LGBT kid could be born to. With the inception of PFLAG Denver in 1980, she helped create a safe space for parents and their children who needed support from people who know the pain that discrimination and social stigma can bring upon a family.
When the AIDS epidemic hit Denver, Nancy leaped to action and created PFLAG Denver’s AIDS Family Support Group and seldom missed a meeting for the next 18 years.
With vascular dementia and partial blindness from macular degeneration remaining an unfortunate presence in Nancy’s life, funds have gotten low. Nancy and her children have exhausted their accounts in bold attempts to keep up with medical bills. The care required for Nancy costs around $4,000/month. With a move to the facility, quality health care will be available to her round the clock.
We hope the community can spare a little something to help take care of the den mother who cared so passionately about us all these years.
The Keenes have created a GoFundMe account that makes donating quick and simple.
