Nick Frost Says His Views Don’t Align with JK Rowling’s Views
Producers have recently cast Nick Frost, a famous actor from Shaun of the Dead, as Rubeus Hagrid for the future HBO Harry Potter series. The Pink News reported that many people were very critical of Frost’s decision to be part of this project since J.K. Rowling, a widely known transphobic and ace-phobic person, will be producing it. As a response, Frost announced to The Observer that he doesn’t agree with J.K. Rowling’s beliefs. “She’s allowed her opinion, and I’m allowed mine; they just don’t align in any way, shape or form,” is what he said.
Now, Frost joining the project doesn’t automatically mean he is anti-queer. According to the same Pink News article, one of the major projects he is in is a trans-focused sitcom called Transaction where he will work with Jordan Gray, a trans comedian. Frost could be completely truthful in his statement about his and Rowling’s views not aligning. Not to mention there are people who are under the trans umbrella or on the ace spectrum and still like Harry Potter. They are choosing not to associate the story with the queer-phobic J.K. Rowling. However, saying you support the trans and ace communities is different than actually showing your support for them through actions.
In this case, Frost is part of a project which will directly support J.K. Rowling financially. When Rowling gets more money, she will donate anti-trans or anti-asexual groups just as she did in the past. She will further the false narrative that trans and ace people “don’t exist” when they, in fact, do exist. No matter what Frost says about his views compared to Rowling’s views, his actions display an anti-queer statement, harming the community he says he supports.
I am sorry, Nick Frost, but your actions make it difficult to believe you want to support us. If you weren’t working for a anti-trans/asexual person, it would be completely fine for you to play as Rubeus Hagrid. In fact, I would be okay with HBO making a Harry Potter series, but that is not reality. So please, for all who are reading this, consider and research about who you support. That person might bring direct harm into our community.
