Lawyer Involved in Anti-Trans Lawsuit Dropped for Racist Posts

Supreme Court

Right-wing lawyer Christopher Roach was dismissed from a conservative law firm, Lawfair, after WIRED uncovered white supremacist posts across various platforms associated with his person. Lawfair, founded by former Clarence Thomas clerk Adam Mortara, is providing counsel on a U.S. Supreme Court case which could severely hinder access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth.

WIRED worked with Travis Brown—the man responsible for unmasking Chaya Raichik as the woman behind LibsofTikTok—to uncover a Twitter account linked to Roach. The accounts used several pseudonyms in reference to known white supremacists. It appeared to be suspended in 2022. The posts are excluded from the Wayback Machine as of this article’s publishing.

The account posted racist messages spanning several years. In 2020, he harassed a Black mother, saying “(a)ctually white lives matter the Most and are the most important bc we are the most productive and innocent ppl on this planet” and “I’m making sure my kids are white and that they don’t encounter any more minorities than absolutely necessary bc 13do50.” The last phrase, “13do50,” is a racist dog whistle that claims Black Americans are 13% of the population, yet they are responsible for 50% of murders. The account also shared Roach’s own articles written for American Greatness, a right-wing think tank publication. Roach has written for American Greatness as recently as last Tuesday.

WIRED and Brown independently verified the email connected to the account. The email featured his surname and a location where he previously worked. It also connects him to comments made on VDare. VDare is a website labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center as bridging the gap between the mainstream republican party and white nationalism. According to WIRED, Roach went on a racist rant where he advocated for “a willingness to say, ‘We will control blacks when they get out of control.’”

Roach told WIRED that he no longer held these views, but he did not explain how or when this change of heart came about.
