Kidd Madonny to mix it up at Vinyl Pride Sunday
One of the world’s hottest DJs – headlining Vinyl’s Climax Pride After Party June 17 – has traveled the world, designed many great events and has launched his own clothing and underwear lines. That’s DJ Kidd Madonny – who spoke with Out Front Colorado on what he’s up to and has planned to shake things up in Denver.
Your first gig was in February 2005. About how many shows have you DJ’ed in that time?
I would say that I’ve done around 400. When I was with my residency, I would DJ at some clubs every weekend. Now I do it pretty much once a weekend.
Have you ever come out to DJ in Denver before?
Actually no, but I was there as a performer and a decorator for the Babylon Tour for the Queer As Folk. And me and my ex-partner were performers for the tour for the five years we were on it before. So we went to Denver several times.
How would you describe a Denver audience compared to other places that you’ve been to?
I’m kind of excited. I remember when I was there as a performer during the Babylon Tour, I remember everyone was very happy, high-energy, so I’m excited to come back as a DJ this year and show them my style and my show.
What made you decide to stop in Colorado for Denver Pride?
DJ Tatiana. I ran into her when she was here in Miami at Alfaro and she invited me to come play for Pride and I was like “Oh, I’d love to. I’d love to be a part of Pride.” And she told me about this amazing event on Sunday at Vinyl. And I was like “Oh, it sounds like a great party.” And I heard it’s a great club so…
What are you most looking forward to about Climax?
Oh, the people. I got all my toys all ready, shipping stuff over there and everything. I mean it’s only a two hour set but I’m coming with all the bells and whistles. So I’m really excited. I’m putting a lot into my set so people are going to tell the difference.
It seems that you have DJed a lot of Pride events before. Do you enjoy DJing for LGBT events and how are they different from other events?
It’s Pride and you know why we’re all coming together. It’s kind of like our holiday so it’s exciting, you know. It’s just you see everyone from all colors and backgrounds all come together and just stand together and have a good time, you know what I mean? And there’s no evilness in the day, which feels really good. And when you play to that you just feel that energy. It’s just great and you’re like, “OK, it’s all good.”
What is your favorite part of being a DJ and what is that moment that makes it all worthwhile?
The yelling and the screaming and the smiles on the faces when I’m playing. Hands in the air, jumping around. You know, when you feel the energy and everyone’s having a good time.
I hear you have a new underwear line. What is it called?
My underwear line is called M.I.A., Men In Action. It’s also an abbreviation for Miami. Or when you lose the underwear, you’re M.I.A. ]
