In collaboration with Sacre’Bleu and Melanated Ménagerie, The Chrysalis House reunites once more to produce a remarkable, highly anticipated show encompassing the “radical joy” of queer, trans, Black, Brown, and Indigenous people of color. The event, “Yuck It Up Comedy Showcase,” is set to take place at The Clocktower Cabaret on Wednesday, June 22 at 7 p.m.
Vaudeville has a reputation for showcasing talented queer, BIPOC performers, and Chrysalis intends to do the same with their show. A huge part of Chrysalis’ mission is to actively provide “solidarity and equitable change,” pledging to use their platform for purpose.
They explain their overall mission centers accessible, holistic healing, education, and “the opportunity to enter into your own ‘chrysalis’ and be affirmed by the beautiful wings you may not see.”
The troupe is already known for their sex-positive collaborative with the intent of transformation. The collaborative is operated by two Black, queer, femme sex workers and educators.
“We are mostly a troupe of Vaudeville artists that are understated and misunderstood and who practice intersectional feminist views,” they say.
Chrysalis provides a safe haven for marginalized groups of people to share space and commune while answering their artistic calling, utilizing comedy as a healing modality while sharing their story.
Chrysalis believes providing these spaces “can be the catalyst for change regarding various topics (i.e., decriminalization of sex work, housing security, sexual education, radical joy, etc.).”
“With this show, we hope to produce radical joy, side-splitting comedy, and uplifting of excellence,” the troupe adds.
Participants will have roughly 15-21 minutes to perform their piece, and the audience will decide who gave the best “side-busting yuck.” The winner gets a larger portion of the tips and the possibility to host upcoming shows with Sacre’Bleu.
All shows are 18-plus, and guests may arrive 30 minutes prior to the listed showtime. Keep in mind any unclaimed seats will be released at showtime. Chrysalis also offers entertainment both virtually and in person.
