Rising LGBTQ pop star and YouTube sensation Jay Alan is preparing for the release of his new EP, Play Pretend, on April 8. Ahead of the EP release, he’s sharing a new acoustic, live video for the track, “Something Slow to Dance To,” which is premiering exclusively here at OFM.
“Play Pretend tells the story of my first love, from catching feelings to the moment I knew it was over,” Alan says. “When I listened to the project after it was finished, I sat back and really felt like this was the music I’ve always wanted to make. I think this is the closest I’ve been to my true artist sound.”
The acoustic video for “Something Slow to Dance To” is one of three acoustic session videos Alan will release along with the EP.
“I see memories of myself at middle school dances when I listen to this song,” Alan says. “Growing up in Indiana, I never dared to fully express my sexuality or dance with who I wanted to out of fear of judgment. I hope queer people listening to this song can find the courage and strength to be themselves unapologetically. Go dance with who you want—Let them watch!”
The Boston-based singer-songwriter is looking to expand a space for LGBTQ people to feel accepted, supported, and loved with his music. He first started with covers on his YouTube channel before releasing his debut single, “Cold,” in 2019, met with a sturdy 100,000 streams in the first two weeks it was online.
He’s continued adding to his repertoire of songs over the past couple of years, now with more than 2 million streams on his independent releases. Even as a musician from a small town in Indiana, Alan has his eyes set on making an impact in the music industry.
