Over 240 LGBTQ+ artists are petitioning a permanent ceasefire to Gaza, and vowing to boycott from performing in Israel.
This petition comes about as it has now been 5 months since Israel has started a genocide in Palestine, and the Gaza strip which houses millions of people, and has the most dense population in the world.
Since October, Israeli soldiers have killed over 20,000 Palestinians, and have displaced over two million people in Gaza. This current genocide is extremely alarming to the rest of the world due to the Israeli governments continuous attacks on Gazas residents. An even more problematic, is that they have targeted places that Israel had told Palestinians to seek refuge.
Artists that have since signed the petition include; Indya Moore, Boygenius, Angelica Ross, and many others. All these performers range from music artists to drag performers, and are all vowing to stand in Solidarity with Palestine.
Queer Palestinians are not only asking for the help of queer artists, but also the queer community in general in order to challenge the Israeli governments brutal military force, but also to challenge Israel’s “pink washing” method.
Pink washing refers to a term put on the Israeli government that paints an image of supporting the LGBTQ+ community, when in reality it is a pink blanket with a history of human rights violations hiding underneath it. This also includes the current treatment of Palestinian civilians.
One thing that is clear is this, human rights are being forcefully taken by the israeli government in order to maintain power over people that had a spot in the land first. Previous conflicts about Israel, and Palestine have been over land equality, and about religious conflicts.
Other letters that have been created are known as “Queer Artists for Palestine”, “Artists For Ceasefire”, and “Musicians For Ceasefire”. They have all gained over 6,000 signatures since their creation.
It is important that we stand in solidarity with Palestine, make donations, and offer support where it is needed.
